Statesville Prison, PA:
Lindsay rubbed her temples. She couldn't believe her thoughts were turning to Colin.
"Hey, Rappaport!"
Lindsay glanced up to see the prison guard, hands on hips, regarding her with her usual sneer, her reptilian eyes surveying the inmate with cold disdain. ?The warden's givin' you a break. You?ll be back to your old cell and work duty tomorrow."
Lindsay nodded, almost relieved. Counting cracks in the walls was beginning to lose some of its entertainment value. She wondered whether Allison had pulled strings for her. "Thank you," she replied simply.
The guard's eyes seemed to soften ? or maybe it was a trick of the light. "Do you remember what I told you about finding a reason for living?"
Lindsay leaned against the wall and sighed. "How could I forget?"
"If you're a smart woman -- and I know you are, Rappaport --- you'll follow my advice. I've worked here a long time... heard all the stories..."
"How do you know Allison?" Lindsay interrupted.
The guard's face broke into a rare grin. "Wouldn't you like to know? I'll tell you this -- Ally is someone you want on your side in this place." She chuckled. "You?re lucky she seems to have a soft spot for you."
She turned to leave and any trace of humor left her face. "Better get some sleep tonight, Rappaport. We have extra work detail waiting for you. There'll be no time for afternoon tea, my lady.
